The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has changed how early intervention services are provided in Australia.
For children aged 0-7 years, there is a special NDIS pathway called Early Childhood Approach. In our region, Northcott is our early childhood partner.
The early childhood partner will either:
- Support the child with connections to early supports including getting information and connection to community and mainstream services.
Or - If a child has a disability or is likely to meet the developmental delay criteria, the early childhood partners, together with the child’s family, will gather further information about the child’s development and/or disability and apply for the NDIS. If the child’s application is successful, an individualized NDIS plan will be created to address their needs. This plan will be submitted to the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) for approval and funding allocation.
It's important to note that children aged 0-6 years don't need a diagnosis to get support through the early childhood approach where there are concerns about their development.
The focus is on understanding and meeting each child's unique needs to support their growth and well-being. For more information see Northcott - NDIS Early Childhood Approach
